Heritage Malta wishes to inform the general public that as from the 26th of March, due to ongoing conservation works at the Ġgantija Temples in Xagħra, the entrance to this archaeological site off Imqades Street will be closed to the public.
Access to this site will be via another entrance located on Parisot Street. Appropriate signage will be set-up so as to aid visitors in reaching the temporary entrance to the temples. The planned conservation project will see Ġgantija Temples adopt a new interpretation centre similar to the one available at Ħaġar Qim Park.
Works on the Ġgantija Temples form part of the ERDF32 – Archaeological Heritage Conservation Project. This will see the embellishment and conservation of two sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the ‘Maltese Megalithic Temples’ inscription, Ġgantija and Tarxien Temples, as well as St Paul’s Catacombs which are an outstanding example of Malta’s Catacombs. St Paul’s Catacombs are currently on the Tentative List for future inscription as a World Heritage Site.
The general public is also being advised that on Monday the 26th of March, the Ġgantija Temples will be closed to visitors from 14.00hrs onwards (last entrance at 13.30hrs). For more information call the Gozo Area Office on 21564188.
